BEHERIT/ARCHGOAT – MESSE DES MORTS/ANGELCUNT (TALES OF DESECRATION)Beherit is one of those names that is irrefutably synonymous with black metal. Along with Burzum, Mayhem, Emperor, Blasphemy, Von, and some others, it just becomes standard to hold them amongst the elite of the genre. Granted, they do have a few questionable releases in their foray (why would anybody spend a dime on "Electric Doom Synthesis"?), but this split, "Drawing Down the Moon", and the earth-shattering "The Oath of Black Blood" are essentials in any collection. I mean, where else can you hear Holocausto shriek like a monkey on PCP than on this disc? Exactly. The Archgoat material happens to take up the majority of the disc, and as luck would have it this excellent obscure act recently reformed with some new material on deck. Their style is very filthy in production with goatish vocals in the vein of early Demoncy, for the Neanderthal in all of us to enjoy. Thankfully, ISO666 rescued this mighty release from being long lost as its original label Necropolis saw its empire crumble for many a reason (like trying to act like a major label). Now if ISO666 could only snag that Sadistic Intent album that Necrapolis never did release, life would be great. (FA)
